(1) Or the like of him (Uzair) who passed by a town, and it had fallen down upon its roofs; he said: When will Allah give it life after its death? So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him to life. He said: How long have you tarried? He said: I have tarried a day, or a part of a day. Said He: Nay! you have tarried a hundred years; then look at your food and drink-- years have not passed over it; and look at your ass; and that We may make you a sign to men, and look at the bones, how We set them together, then clothed them with flesh; so when it became clear to him, he said: I know that Allah has power over all things.
(2) On the day when He will call you forth, then shall you obey Him, giving Him praise, and you will think that you tarried but a little (while).
(3) And thus did We rouse them that they might question each other. A speaker among them said: How long have you tarried? They said: We have tarried for a day or a part of a day. (Others) said: Your Lord knows best how long you have tarried. Now send one of you with this silver (coin) of yours to the city, then let him see which of them has purest food, so let him bring you provision from it, and let him behave with gentleness, and by no means make your case known to any one:
(4) We know best what they say, when the fairest of them in course would say: You tarried but a day.
(5) They will say: We tarried a day or part of a day, but ask those who keep account.
(6) (Firon) said: Did we not bring you up as a child among us, and you tarried among us for (many) years of your life?
(7) And he tarried not long, then said: I comprehend that which you do not comprehend and I have brought to you a sure information from Sheba.
(8) And those who are given knowledge and faith will say: Certainly you tarried according to the ordinance of Allah till the day of resurrection, so this is the day of resurrection, but you did not know.
(9) But when We decreed death for him, naught showed them his death but a creature of the earth that ate away his staff; and when it fell down, the jinn came to know plainly that if they had known the unseen, they would not have tarried in abasing torment.
(10) Except an old woman (who was) amongst those who tarried.
