(291) Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah;

(292) He shall say: By Allah! you had almost caused me to perish;

(293) And We caused to grow up for him a gourdplant.

(294) Not against Him can you cause (any) to fall into trial,

(295) And surely they used to say:

(296) o Dawood! surely We have made you a ruler in the land; so judge between men with justice and do not follow desire, lest it should lead you astray from the path of Allah; (as for) those who go astray from the path of Allah, they shall surely have a severe punishment because they forgot the day of reckoning.

(297) And they shall say: What is the matter with us that we do not see men whom we used to count among the vicious?

(298) And when distress afflicts a man he calls upon his Lord turning to Him frequently; then when He makes him possess a favor from Him, he forgets that for which he called upon Him before, and sets up rivals to Allah that he may cause (men) to stray off from His path. Say: Enjoy yourself in your ungratefulness a little, surely you are of the inmates of the fire.

(299) That is because when Allah alone was called upon, you disbelieved, and when associates were given to Him, you believed; so judgment belongs to Allah, the High, the Great.

(300) That was because there came to them their apostles with clear arguments, but they rejected (them), therefore Allah destroyed them; surely He is Strong, Severe in retribution.
