(31) So Moses returned to his people in a state of indignation and sorrow. He said: "O my people! did not your Lord make a handsome promise to you? Did then the promise seem to you long (in coming)? Or did ye desire that wrath should descend from your Lord on you, and so ye broke your promise to me?"

(32) Say: "Who can keep you safe by night and by day from (the wrath of) (Allah) Most Gracious?" Yet they turn away from the mention of their Lord.

(33) If but a breath of the wrath of thy Lord do touch them, they will then say, "Woe to us! we did wrong indeed!"

(34) And remember Zun-nun, when he departed in wrath: He imagined that We had no power over him! But he cried through the deptHs of darkness, "There is no god but thou: glory to thee: I was indeed wrong!"

(35) The Day ye shall see it, every mother giving suck shall forget her suckling-babe, and every pregnant female shall drop her load (unformed): thou shalt see mankind as in a drunken riot, yet not drunk: but dreadful will be the wrath of Allah.

(36) And the fifth (oath) should be that she solemnly invokes the wrath of Allah on herself if (her accuser) is telling the truth.

(37) Those who say, "Our Lord! avert from us the wrath of Hell, for its wrath is indeed an affliction grievous,-

(38) Then there are among men such as say, "We believe in Allah"; but when they suffer affliction in (the cause of) Allah, they treat men's oppression as if it were the wrath of Allah! And if help comes (to thee) from thy Lord, they are sure to say, "We have (always) been with you!" Does not Allah know best all that is in the hearts of all creation?

(39) "Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway?- and practise wickedness (even) in your councils?" But his people gave no answer but this: they said: "Bring us the wrath of Allah if thou tellest the truth."

(40) For when their messengers came to them with Clear Signs, they exulted in such knowledge (and skill) as they had; but that very (wrath) at which they were wont to scoff hemmed them in.
