(53) Then they proceeded: until, when they came to the inhabitants of a town, they asked them for food, but they refused them hospitality. They found there a wall on the point of falling down, but he set it up straight. (Moses) said: "If thou hadst wished, surely thou couldst have exacted some recompense for it!"

(54) could they not see that it could not return them a word (for answer), and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good?

(55) The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old."

(56) They say: "What! when we die and become dust and bones, could we really be raised up again?

(57) Blessed is He who, if that were His will, could give thee better (things) than those,- Gardens beneath which rivers flow; and He could give thee palaces (secure to dwell in).

(58) Seest thou such a one as taketh for his god his own passion (or impulse)? couldst thou be a disposer of affairs for him?

(59) Hast thou not turned thy vision to thy Lord?- How He doth prolong the shadow! If He willed, He could make it stationary! then do We make the sun its guide;

(60) Had it been Our Will, We could have sent a warner to every centre of population.
