(75) But (there were people) before them, who denied (the Signs),- the People of Noah, and the Confederates (of Evil) after them; and every People plotted against their prophet, to seize him, and disputed by means of vanities, therewith to condemn the Truth; but it was I that seized them! and how (terrible) was My Requital!

(76) Then shall it be said to them: "Where are the (deities) to which ye gave part-worship-

(77) The (deities) they used to invoke aforetime will leave them in the lurch, and they will perceive that they have no way of escape.

(78) Thus have We sent by inspiration to thee an Arabic Qur'an: that thou mayest warn the Mother of Cities and all around her,- and warn (them) of the Day of Assembly, of which there is no doubt: (when) some will be in the Garden, and some in the Blazing Fire.

(79) ("Ah!") they say, "If it had been the will of (Allah) Most Gracious, we should not have worshipped such (deities)!" Of that they have no knowledge! they do nothing but lie!

(80) Also, they say: "Why is not this Qur'an sent down to some leading man in either of the two (chief) cities?"
