(17) We did indeed send, before thee, messengers to their (respective) peoples, and they came to them with Clear Signs: then, to those who transgressed, We meted out Retribution: and it was due from Us to aid those who believed.

(18) They swore their strongest oaths by Allah that if a warner came to them, they would follow his guidance better than any (other) of the peoples: But when a warner came to them, it has only increased their flight (from righteousness),-

(19) But how many were the prophets We sent amongst the peoples of old?

(20) So We destroyed (them)- stronger in power than these;- and (thus) has passed on the Parable of the peoples of old.
