(33) Then they proceeded: until, when they came to the inhabitants of a town, they asked them for food, but they refused them hospitality. (34) He said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?"

(35) Had it not been for a Word that went forth before from thy Lord, (their punishment) must necessarily have come; but there is a Term appointed (for respite).

(36) Nay, it may come to them all of a sudden and confound them: no power will they have then to avert it, nor will they (then) get respite.

(37) And the Companions of the Madyan People; and Moses was rejected (in the same way). But I granted respite to the Unbelievers, and (only) after that did I punish them: but how (terrible) was my rejection (of them)!

(38) And to how many populations did I give respite, which were given to wrong-doing? in the end I punished them. To me is the destination (of all).

(39) Then they will say: "Shall we be respited?"

(40) They ask thee to hasten on the Punishment (for them): had it not been for a term (of respite) appointed, the Punishment would certainly have come to them: and it will certainly reach them,- of a sudden, while they perceive not!
