(42) They said: "O Zul-qarnain! the Gog and Magog (People) do great mischief on earth: shall we then render thee tribute in order that thou mightest erect a barrier between us and them?

(43) The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old."

(44) And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and on whom We had bestowed the good things of this life, said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: he eats of that of which ye eat, and drinks of what ye drink.

(45) To Pharaoh and his chiefs: But these behaved insolently: they were an arrogant people.

(46) (Pharaoh) said to the chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed:

(47) "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)."

(48) "And withhold not things justly due to men, nor do evil in the land, working mischief.

(49) (The queen) said: "Ye chiefs! here is delivered to me - a letter worthy of respect.

(50) She said: "Ye chiefs! advise me in (this) my affair: no affair have I decided except in your presence."
